  • Yellow-headed amazon

Green-yellow plumage allows you to remain a beautiful bright bird unnoticed in the thickets of moist forests, and in the dense foliage of trees growing in Honduras, Mexico and Guatemala. The length of their body, covered with thick plumage, is 37-41 cm. Despite the fact that the bird is not easy to notice among the lush vegetation, it faces complete extinction, because in natural conditions only 6,000 yellow-headed amazons live.

  • Cinnamon Amazon

If you manage to get to the Lesser Antilles, there you will certainly see this parrot. The length of his body is slightly larger than that of the yellow-headed Amazon - about 43 centimeters. 450 individuals live in the wild, so the bird is on the verge of extinction.

It is unlikely that you will find a breeder who would be engaged in the cultivation of blue-faced Amazon, in captivity it is almost impossible to meet them.

  • Big vase parrot

A bird with a low-key gray plumage lives in the dry deciduous forests of Madagascar and the Comoros. The length of its body is not large, the tail is longer than the body, but along with the tail the length of the parrot is 50 cm.

Noisy and talkative parrots with their dark coloring and flapping wings resemble a raven.

  • Yellow-eared Mourning Cockatoo

The weight of this bird is almost 1000 g, its length is up to 60 cm, if you compare it with a budgie, it turns out that it is three times more. The black color of the feathers is similar to the mourning decoration, but the yellow speck on the head refreshes the gloomy coloring. The females are more elegant - their speck is more. Another decoration is the crest, but if the bird does not raise it, then notice it is not easy.

  • Owl parrot

Want to see the oldest parrot? But be prepared for the fact that his howling hoarse voice, sometimes resembling a squeal, is unlikely to cause you tenderness and delight. Birds are masters of throat singing, their voice is heard at a distance of 5 kilometers, and this helps them attract females. Does this scare you, and you want to see the marriage ritual with your own eyes? Then get ready for New Zealand. It is here that you will meet this endangered species, whose representatives are nocturnal.

Kakapo - the so-called parrot, has a heavy body, so it doesn’t always work for him; the bird spends its leisure time on foot. The weight of the parrot is 4 kg, the length is 60 cm. If you feel a pleasant smell of honey or flowers, take a look around, maybe there is some kind of cocoa nearby.

  • Blue and yellow macaw

These parrots are popular among bird lovers, they are sociable, but, like all representatives of the macaw genus, they need special care and increased attention to their person. Some representatives of the clan were lucky to meet even their centenary.

  Pictured is a blue-and-yellow macaw

Their body has a length of up to 95 cm, wingspan, as in the parrots described above, is 80 cm. Living with such a pet under one roof is not easy. Not only does he need space to stretch his wings. His piercing and harsh, unpleasantly, voice is unlikely to please you or your neighbors, and the loud voice of the macaw is heard very far.

As you know, a lot of parrots have quite impressive dimensions. But who is the largest among them?

The biggest

The largest parrot in the world is the hyacinth macaw.

  Pictured hyacinth macaw

This is the largest and rarest representative of the macaw genus, so the record bird is not cheap. Their length can be up to 98 cm, and weight - up to 1.5 kg. But their wings are not as wide as those of the macaws described above, the wingspan of the hyacinth macaw is up to 75 cm.

Most of the feathers are blue in color, and in yellow they are painted only near the eyes and under the beak. Due to the impressive size and incredibly beautiful plumage, the demand for these exotic birds has always been high, therefore, every year their number decreased by several times.

So, as we see, it is among Ara that there are the most record holders. Among large parrots, there are species that are able to surprise not only with their size, but also with mental abilities.

The largest talking parrots

If you are interested in talking parrots of large sizes, then these are amazons, including yellow-headed amazon.

Amazon is a large, bright, talking parrot. Green birds with marks of red, yellow, blue, or white can learn on their own, can "take lessons" from the owner. In total, the vocabulary of Amazon can be up to 60 words.

Parrots quickly get used to the new environment, do not make noise in vain. So that the Amazons do not get sick, they need to create comfortable conditions and a special microclimate. Proper nutrition, a certain temperature regime, the absence of drafts, frequent communication and a positive microclimate in the house - this is what is most important for them. An adult speaker bird can be bought for $ 1,000, and above, a chick for $ 500.

Aru can also be taught to speak, but do not be surprised if he remembers only the barking of dogs, the creak of doors or the noise of a car. They can remember about 20 words, but only they will speak out of place. Parrots cost from one and a half to three thousand dollars.

The largest parrots have always been interesting to man, not only as exotic giant birds. People do not get tired of admiring their intelligence, charm, tenderness, bright plumage, sociability and love for us. Therefore, over the years, interest in them does not fade.

Moving to cities, people still try to be closer to nature, growing flowers on the windowsill or having pets: cats, dogs. The desire to keep a bird at home is no exception, because it is so nice to listen to singing, melodic tweets in the morning or when you come home from work. The most popular feathered friends who can be kept in apartment conditions are parrots. But there are so many kinds of them that your eyes run wide, who should you give preference to? In this article we will consider the most common breeds of parrots that are suitable for keeping at home, and their features. Then you will understand which bird is right for you.

Parrots (breeds, species names) for home maintenance

Scientists estimate that more than three hundred species of parrots live on our planet. Of these, a significant proportion of people have made pets. All parrots are somewhat different from each other: in size, in the diversity of plumage, in a peculiar way of singing, and in their lifespan. One species of these exotic birds will be more capable of talking, the other of beautiful melodies, the third of performing tricks, and the fourth will be talented in various fields. In addition, each parrot, like people, has its own character, from friendly and unpretentious to aggressive and demanding. Therefore, it is worth taking a responsible approach to choosing a bird, deciding which criterion will be the most important for you.

In this article, we will consider parrot breeds such as budgerigars, lovebirds, corals, necklace and amazon parrots, cockatoos, jaco and macaws. The list starts small and ends with larger species.

  Budgies

Perhaps everyone has heard of budgies. And this is not at all surprising. The popularity of budgies is determined by their low price, friendliness, small size, which allows them to be kept even in small apartments, and a bright plumage: green, blue, yellow, white, motley. Of course, these are not all the colors these parrots can be painted on. The natural color is green, but now you can find any combination, for example, a yellow head and a purple body or a lemon head, and the body in half is green and blue. You can even hear such unusual names of colors as anthracite, pearl, turquoise, purple, rainbow.

Conditionally, we can say that there are two breeds of budgies - these are ordinary and exhibition. The latter are distinguished by larger sizes and more pronounced beads on the cheeks. From the name it is clear that exhibition budgies (or Czechs, as they are also called) are suitable for participation in exhibitions.

Budgerigars are flocks of birds, this must be taken into account when starting a house of such a feathered pet. Solitary content is not recommended unless you can devote a lot of time to your friend. While you are at work or doing your business, the parrot may just get bored.

"Wavy" perfectly trained in conversation, imitate melodies, learn tricks. It is a common misconception that only males are capable of all this, and only with solitary confinement. This is not so, females, for example, pronounce words even more clearly than males, and you can teach conversation even in a flock.

Perhaps, of the shortcomings of this parrot breed, there is only noise and garbage that spreads around the cage. But the dirt will be from any living creature, and the bird is there to sing songs.

Lovebirds

These parrots got their name because they create couples for life. It’s very nice to watch the special devotion of these birds. You will always see them together, unless, of course, you get a couple: a female and a male.

Lovebirds make specific sounds, very vociferous, but still considered quiet. The quietest of these parrots is the pink-cheeked lovebird. These birds can be tamed, they make contact with a person, but keeping them in the same cage with other parrots is not worth it, as they are aggressive towards other species.

Corella (nymphs)

If we talk about medium-sized species, the most popular breed of parrots is Corella. They are also called nymphs. These are funny savvy birds with a funny crest and orange cheeks, reminiscent of a cockatoo, only smaller in size.

The Corellas also make contact, easily learn tricks, but they are not as capable as budgerigars to imitate a conversation, but you can still learn words with them. They emit a melodic whistle, but express their dissatisfaction with something with a piercing scream.

Parakeets

They got their name because of the strip around the neck resembling a necklace. Only males have it, females do not. Necklace parrots are found in green, blue, grayish-blue and yellow.

These parrots are unpretentious in leaving, very smart, able to talk, behave cautiously in communication, they are easy to scare with careless movement, while they are freedom-loving. Necklace parrots are interesting to watch. For example, when these birds move along the perch or twig, they use their beak for this as another fulcrum.

Amazons (Amazonian Parrots)

If we consider the breed of talking parrots, it should be noted that the Amazons are considered the most calm. They quickly get used to the new home and are friendly to the person. These are capable parrots, but it is believed that it is easiest to memorize words and train white-headed, yellow-headed and blue-faced amazons. By the way, the natural color of these parrots is bright green with spots of yellow, red, blue and white.

Of the minuses of the Amazons, one can note the musty smell of plumage arising from poor care, as well as their loudness, which they begin to show only in old age. But such a drawback is usually all large parrots.

Cockatoo

Most often on sale you can find black-billed cockatoo. This funny mobile bird will bring a lot of joy to all family members. Kakadu loves to dance to music, while doing squats, bowing and crest movements. This parrot can not learn many words, but it is very quick-witted, it easily opens the door in the cage and likes to repeat movements after the owner.

The character of the cockatoo is unsweetened, especially if you spoil it. If you do not give him proper attention, this parrot will scream loudly until it receives it.

Jaco

What other breeds of domestic parrots exist? Jaco can become a full member of the family. It is believed that this large parrot has little intelligence, easily learns words, phrases, songs, can even answer questions and mimic the voices of people or animals. There is an opinion that the red-tailed jaco is more gifted in terms of teaching human speech, compared with the brown-tailed jaco.

This parrot requires a lot of attention, especially at the chick's age, in order to raise it correctly. If the owner has little time for jaco, it is better to have a couple, loneliness is poorly tolerated by them. Also, these parrots are keenly responsive to any changes, for example, moving furniture can cause stress, leading to plucking. Jacot expresses his displeasure with a piercing cry, reminiscent of a crows croaking. Therefore, before buying this bird, you should consider whether you can make such a noise.

In fact, these are not all breeds of parrots that can be kept at home. Before buying this or that kind, it is worthwhile to study the literature in more detail, revealing the features and nuances of the content, so that then there are no surprises. And remember that we are responsible for those we tamed.

Two types of parrots

Based on the criteria by which to determine the largest parrot, Kakapo and the Great Hyacinth Macaw are considered the largest. The first is the largest, if you take into account the length of the body and its weight, and the second - based on the length from the beak to the tip of the tail. At the same time, both species of parrots are on the verge of extinction and are extremely rare and expensive birds in the world.

Cacapo Owl Parrot

Cacapo (Strigops habroptilus) or owl parrot the only representative of the subfamily of owl parrots. It is found only in New Zealand and is currently very rare. Kakapo is a rather large chubby bird, whose body length is about 60 cm and weighing, in adulthood, from 2 to 4 kg. The plumage is soft; the coloration of the lower side of the body is greenish-yellow, the upper - mossy green, with black stripes on the back. In other parts of the body, stripes of various colors: yellow-green, dark brown and lemon yellow. Facial feathers form the facial disc, as in owls, and possibly perform a location function. The voice is hoarse-croaking, turning into shrill, unpleasant sounds. One of the unusual characteristics of cocoa is the strong, but at the same time pleasant smell, similar to the smell of flowers and honey or beeswax.

Kakapo is in the CR category (taxa in critical condition). In April 2009, the number of individuals reached 125, all individuals are known, many of them were given names. Close related species to an owl parrot are parrots from the genus Nestor. Kakapo became isolated from them when New Zealand separated from Gondwana, about 82 million years ago. And about 70 million years ago, Kakapo withdrew from representatives of the genus Nestor. Due to the lack of mammalian predators in New Zealand, kakapo lost its ability to fly. Due to the colonization of the islands by Polynesians and Europeans, who brought rats, cats and ermines to the island, a large number of individuals of the owl parrot were exterminated.

Favorite food of parrots

The owl parrot was widespread in New Zealand; at present it is preserved only in the southwest of the South Island. They live in forests, in places with high humidity, rising to a height of 1500 m above sea level. Muscle weakness and underdevelopment of the keel keel dictate the bird's inability to fly. Maintain mainly on the ground. This is the only parrot leading a twilight and nocturnal lifestyle. In the afternoon, he hides in burrows or clefts of rocks. At night, on trodden paths, he leaves to feed on berries or plant sap (he chews leaves and shoots without tearing them).

Their favorite food is the tiny seeds of a tree in Rome. This fruit fills the kakapu with reproductive power. They reproduce only when the trees bring in a plentiful harvest - about once every 4 years. Kakapu breed slower than other birds, but they live longer, sometimes more than a hundred years. The male’s song is strange, like the bird itself, characteristic of frogs, not parrots. It can be heard for five kilometers. In the mating season, the male will growl, without ceasing for 8 hours every night for three whole months. But the female will answer only if the seeds of Rome are plentiful.

Features of breeding Kakapo

In the breeding season, males become very active, they try to mate with any object that resembles a female (for example, another male, a fallen tree, a rolled up sweater, etc.). They gather in one place and compete with each other for the attention of the female. Between males fights often break out for the best place. During the breeding season (for a male, it lasts 3-4 months), the male somehow loses up to half its weight. The female lays eggs every two years, sometimes less often.

They are nests dug holes in the core of a rotten stump or tree, as well as crevices of rocks. It happens that two entrances lead into the nesting hole, from which tunnels with a length of several tens of centimeters extend, and a chamber is equipped in the depths. Eggs are laid in January-February. In clutch there are usually 2 eggs. Newborn chicks are blind and deaf. They are fledged at the age of 10-12 weeks. When the chickens are several weeks old, the female leaves the nest for a long time, returning only for feeding. The female feeds the chicks for up to 6 months. After leaving the nest, young cacapo stay for about a year near their mother’s nest. On average, only one chick survives.

Strigops habroptila   listed in the International Red Book as a species "in critical condition." It is also included in Appendix I and Appendix II of CITES.

Great Hyacinth Macaw

Great Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) is one of the largest species of parrots. Some individuals reach a length of 80-98 cm, with about half falling on the tail, wing length 36.5 cm; weight 1.5 kg.

The color of the plumage is cobalt blue. On the sides, the head is covered with plumage, only a thin strip at the base of the mandible and a narrow ring around the eyes are not feathery, golden yellow. The tail is gray-blue, long and narrow. The beak is massive, strong (pressure about 15 kg per 1 cm.s.), black. The male is larger than the female. Paws are dark gray. The tongue is fleshy, dry. Paws are dark gray. Zygodactyly fingers: two fingers look forward, two fingers back. The skin throughout the body has a pale yellow tint (except for the paws). The iris is dark brown. The voice is very loud, sharp, guttural, including a hoarse screech. Heard at fairly large distances (1-1.5 km).

There is a large hyacinth macaw in the Central, Eastern and Southeastern parts of Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay. Inhabit the outskirts of the forest, afforestation, marshland, palm groves. They are found along rivers, less often in selva up to an altitude of 800 m above sea level. Out of the breeding season, they are kept in small family flocks (up to 6-12 individuals).

Active during daylight hours. Every day they fly to fodder areas, located several tens of kilometers from the place of overnight. Morning feeding begins at about 9 a.m. Early in the morning they gather in packs on dead trees and preen. During hot hours, they rest in the crown of trees. They feed on palm nuts (Scheelea phalerata and Acrocomia aculeata), cleverly gnawing them with a strong beak, ripe and unripe fruits (figs) and fruits, berries, water snails. They feed both in the crowns of trees and on the ground. Gravel is periodically swallowed.

Hyacinth Macaw in the Wild

In the wild, hyacinth macaw forms a married couple, there are also small family groups of 6-12 birds.

Macaws nest in tree hollows or in burrows, which they dig with the help of their beak and paws on steep river banks. Researchers observed the nesting of these birds also in clefts among the stones. These parrots nest once or twice a year.

The mating season begins most often in May, in the clutch most often there are only 2 eggs. About a month after the start of mating, the female lays an egg, then with the interval of 2-3 days - the next. The day after the laying of the first egg, the female sits on the nest. The male is nearby. Incubation lasts approximately 26 days. Chicks hatch blind and naked, in the first days of their lives they are fed and warmed mainly by the female. Chicks begin to fledge in the second month of life; feather growth finally ends after 10 weeks. And at the age of 90 days, they already leave the nest. Until six months they will be in the care of the male. Macaws reach puberty at the age of 3 years, after which the hyacinth macaw finds a mate in their usual environment.

Life of a parrot at risk

The life of this parrot has not been studied well enough; the reason for this is its habitat, which is practically inaccessible to researchers.

This species of bird is endangered. By the end of the 20th century, there were up to 3,000 individuals in the wild. Disappeared from many territories occupied by him. The reason for the decline in the population is hunting, trapping (about 10,000 individuals were caught in the 1980s, which contributed to the complete extinction from the territory of Paraguay), loss of natural habitat (occupied by grazing animals, planting exotic trees, under hydroelectric power plants on the Tokantins rivers and Shingu and due to constant fires).

Thanks to the programs for protecting this bird and educational work with landowners in whose territory birds live or nest, the number of individuals doubled by the end of the 20th century. By 2002 (according to McGrath) in the wild, there were about 6,500 individuals. It is listed in the IUCN Red Book.

The largest parrots in the world are in high demand, despite their high cost. This is due to their beautiful appearance and unique character, which is distinguished by good nature, friendliness. The bird likes to stay in society and constantly communicate with people.

If you decide to have a large parrot at home, then it is worth considering several important recommendations:

  • cell selection. This is an important condition for keeping a feathered pet. Preference should be given to spacious options in which the bird can fly and move. The cage should be made of a metal base, because plastic and wooden products have a short life. It is better that it be upright;
  • if the size of the house allows, it is better for the feathered pet to allocate a separate room. In it, he will be able to fly, play, move freely. He will feel freedom, which will positively affect his condition;
  • do not forget about feeders and drinking bowls. Dimensions should allow the bird to safely get food without hitting its edges with its beak;
  • in a cage it is worth placing poles made of natural wood. They are necessary for the bird to play and move. The diameter of the pole must correspond to the size of the legs of the parrot, so that he can freely grasp it;
  • it is worthwhile to provide good nutrition, it is the basis for the full development and growth of the bird. Large parrots will be happy to eat seeds, nuts, millet, wheat, fresh fruits, vegetables, berries. They love currants, raspberries, gooseberries. Among vegetables, it is worth highlighting tomatoes, cucumbers, beets, corn. Sometimes you can include melon, watermelon, banana in the diet. With pleasure they will eat apples, pears.

Of course, these are not all the requirements that must be observed when keeping large parrots. It is important to regularly clean the place of their maintenance, change the water and lay the feed. Do not forget about full communication and plentiful attention, feathered pets are very fond of communication. They are easy to train and quickly remember teams, so feathered pets can quickly become a real friend and assistant for the owner.
