Types of high-flying breeds of pigeons. Training pigeons

Pillar, Pakistani, Iranian and even English. A variety of pigeons is simply mesmerizing. In the article we present the characteristics of each breed, discuss the standards for working with pigeons and the conditions of detention.

High-flying pigeons were bred as a result of long-term targeted selection,  whose goal was to create a bird with balanced flying qualities.

Like other pigeons, high-flying ones greatly lose their flying ability with the onset of spring, due to the fact that all winter they essentially did nothing and did not train.  Measures to restore their physical characteristics differ from similar measures applied, for example, to mail birds. First of all, you will need to build the entire line of training, based on the characteristic features of the view.

So, the following features are considered the most important for training:

  • Regardless of their position, birds seek to satisfy their hunger as quickly as possible;
  • They always return home, no matter how far they are;
  • If pigeons fall into an unfamiliar area, then they rise as high as they can to inspect the surrounding area and see their home, or some familiar shape, territory, at least some clues.

Work standards

There are also certain standards for working with a variety of pigeons:

  1. A thorough and serious check of birds for their flight training, medical examination and compliance with the established
  2. Younger representatives of the species are separated from older ones, and accordingly, young individuals are given higher priority and increased attention during training;
  3. The required number of individuals in flight is determined;
  4. At a certain training stage, both pigeon leaders and outsiders are identified, based on their indicators;
  5. Gradually, the load on animals is growing;
  6. When training should be actively used the instinctive craving of pigeons for the house  as a training item;
  7. Changes in the behavior of birds, their characteristics and all results are mandatory recorded.

Best flight performance in high-flying pigeons is manifested in the environment in which they were born.

A very important factor that should be taken into account during high and long flights is the air flows, and in particular their movement, strength, direction, and the composition of the air itself.

Birds fly much better in clean and transparent ascending air masses, while they are not yet polluted. So it is recommended to release birds in the early morning, preferably at dawn. At the same time, pigeons must be driven out at the same time, so that a conditioned reflex is formed.

It should also be carried out at the appointed time and only after the pigeons have returned. In no case   do not overfeed them.  You also need to make sure that pigeons do not roam for a long time on the roofs or on the street during non-flying time - this also seriously worsens them. High-flying pigeons in their free time should sit in their nest or on a shelf, going down only for a short time to eat, drink, or swim.

Postage

Postal (sports) pigeons have the ability to navigate perfectly in space, as well as a much greater attachment to the home compared to. In this regard, they have been used as mail delivery providers for thousands of years.

These birds are extremely hardy in flight and can travel the longest distances without ever lowering their speed, which averages 60-80 kilometers per hour.

Their flying qualities are evaluated as a result of special sports training competitions that determine the speed of flight of a bird at different distances. To such training competitions only the best representatives of the species are selected,  with the longest flight duration, good speed and high orientation indicators on the ground.

During a training flight, pigeons are exposed to all environmental conditions: they can get caught in the rain, in a snowstorm, during the flight the temperature can be very low, etc., in general, all those factors that also directly affect the final result.  As a result, success depends on the training of birds (the genetic factor plays an important role here); from the time of year, as well as from weather conditions.

If you want to prepare pigeons for competitions, then you need to do this in advance so that they have time to get stronger and get in shape before the start of the competition. Low-trained and physically weak individuals have feature quickly get tired and lost right in the midst of flight.

In the winter, this species of pigeons flies very poorly, it cannot be trusted to fly long distances, because at this time its level of reliability decreases by 25-30% compared with the summer, and the average speed decreases by about half.

The carrier pigeon, if released late in the evening or at night, returns home, usually in the morning.

But you can also train them so that they fly short distances at night and return at the same time, only in this case you need to put in good lighting.

When working with this type, the following standards apply:

  1. It is not recommended to let the birds go right after (1 - 2 days), and besides, it is not worth taking the parents from three-five-day old chicks.
  2. It is not worth releasing young individuals in the same flock with old ones, except for the very first flight, when training over short distances takes place and young pigeons have no experience at all. Also avoid training pair pigeons - the male and the female should try to separate during working hours and release separately.
  3. You cannot let birds out into cities, especially large ones. Need to do everything in an open and visible area.
  4. A couple of days before the start of flights over long distances, try not to fatten pigeons much. Give the birds poop two hours before departure,  but at the same time leave them a little starving, and one hour before departure, give them water to drink.
  5. It is very important to inspect the pigeons before they depart, check for sores, correct feathers, clean the paws of dirt. If the pigeons are sick, then they need to be returned back.
  6.   transported in special spacious baskets. In some cases, they are collected and transported in piles in one cage. At the same time, the conditions of detention during this period are often far from ideal: the cages are polluted with droppings from the inside, and the birds are not given food and drink during transport. So do not forget to observe hygiene and wash cells after trips.

Slaughter

The fighting pigeons have a long enough and high flight, accompanied by a specific popping sound  which their wings emit. Gaining altitude, they sometimes lose their orientation and, crouching over their heads, crashing to the ground, surrounding trees and roofs. At the same time they are quite hardy and can be in the air more than four hours.

Basically, young pigeons fly confidently. They rise into the airspace “in a spiral”, thus quickly reaching heights, where they hang for some time, after which they start to beat sharply with their strong wings and sharp, snap movements rise higher and higher, making somersaults over the head - that is, "the fight".

They show the best results when pairing, while they have chicks. The best flying abilities manifest at the female after a year, and at the male at two to three years.  In winter, they fly much worse.

Beauty of flight

One of the most spectacular performances that pigeons can show is considered mass takeoff of live pigeons,  when they instantly rise into the air, abruptly flapping wings. Taking off, and making characteristic walking movements with their paws, they fly up ten to twelve meters, turn over their heads, then fly up again, and so on. Such a pillar flight, combat pigeons can do several times in one flight session.

Many birds fly by tape - unlike pole,  in this case, the dove flies horizontally, turning over every 2-3 meters.

Although flock sorties are not uncommon, but mostly live pigeons fly alone. Slaughter pigeons need   1-2 weeks of everyday training  after the winter holidays to fully restore the lost flight qualities. Trained birds can fly up to six hours or more.

Pillars

Pillars are the local name for high flying and world famous. This breed has excellent fertility, good genetics, health, and is easily able to adapt to environmental conditions.

Their main feature is increased stamina and an unusual streamlined body shape with a thick, rigid plumage, with strong wings and a tail covered with dense feathers, thanks to which these birds are supported during flight.  Pillars have a good skeleton and strong muscles. Thanks to this, they are very hardy and are able to spend about nine hours in the air without respite, while taking off almost vertically and quickly rising into the air.

Bird colors

Pigeons can have various forms of color:

  • Plain (when the main color is the only one);
  • With an admixture / ripple (it can be either a rich color or a single colored feather);
  • Only shields and secondary feathers are painted white;
  • White pigeons have black and color blotches and vice versa;
  • The color is white; dark and colored spots are on the feathers of the feathers, back and shoulders.

Pigeons

Pakistani pigeons are one of the best representatives of high-flying. They have a very unusual flying style, characteristic only for them: they fly up into the air, then go into the pillar, and then make air coups, flapping their wings loudly.

As soon as the Pakistanis learn to perform basic flight stunts without risking their lives, they will begin to stay confidently in the air. At the same time, on average, they are kept there from three to ten hours.

Pakistanis are predominantly light in color, but there is a beautiful feather pattern that highlights individual parts of their bodies.

Pigeons

Hungarian high-flying pigeons can fly up to ten hours and cover huge distances, remaining invisible to humans. This breed has a great variety in color and pattern, therefore it’s hard to name any dominant color for them.

Due to their unpretentiousness and versatility, this breed has become popular all over the world and has received many positive reviews from critics.

Perm high-flying

Perm high-flying were bred in the Urals and became quite popular in this region. Different branches of the breed, of which there are a whole multitude, differ only in color. Perm are distinguished by their long uniform flight at high altitude. At the same time, they rarely gather in flocks.

Budapest

The breed includes several subspecies. Middle-billed turmans, as well as specular pigeons, belong to it. There are many subspecies that vary in color, although it is mostly white. Budapest fly at such a height that a person can not see them with the naked eye.

Turmans

Turmans are an unusual pigeon breed, famous for its specific flight qualities.  Thurmans can, while in the air, make a coup and roll over through their head, tail, or wing. A good individual carries out a large number of such flip-flops during one flight, which always looks impressive.

Adults, as a rule, fly in groups, as if competing in their skills. They sit down, take a break, and then take off again. Their important advantage is their stamina.  Turmans regularly train, are constantly in the air, and therefore are in good physical shape and, on average, one turman is able to roll over in the air from three to five times in one flight.

Iranian pigeons

Iranian war pigeons are one of the oldest known breeds. Color is different, but most often found: black, yellow, dark gray, red, beige. Although, in principle, almost any color can be seen on the feathers of the Iranians.

Iranians fly slowly and accurately. At the same time, a characteristic battle and a transition to the pillar are necessarily present. They also stand the wind very well. They fly on average from 3 to 10 hours.

Agarans

Agarans are birds related to the Iranians already described. Like the Iranians, they are militant, that is, they turn over their heads in the air. In addition, they have a rare ability to pole flight.

Agarans have a wide variety of plumage colors: they come in shades of brown, come in bluish, and also dark gray, yellow, and golden.

Rising into the air, agaran hangs in a vertical position, but at the same time rotates along the axis. The flight itself does not last long - up to four hours.

Two-pigeon pigeons

Two-pigeon pigeons are one of the subspecies of the Blagodarnensky pigeons, known for their unusual appearance. The most common colors in birds of this breed are orange and brick. The breeding of a black dove is considered a special chic. However, such “spiky" pigeons have their drawbacks: it is a narrow chest and a beak too thin.

Izhevsk

Izhevskys have a good exterior with a uniform color, the colors are mostly traditional: black, red, yellow, with gray spots on the tail. Characteristic of the breed: high return.

English pigeon

The English pigeon, or the English quarry, is a fairly well-known breed of carrier pigeons. Due to the peculiarities of their appearance, they resemble decorative birds, which is why they are especially popular. This bird has a large body and a wide chest. Moreover, they have a long high neck and legs. The plumage is most often monotonous, bright.

Kira Stoletova

Breeders distinguish between pigeons, postal, decorative, meat and flying. Among the last flyers, groups are distinguished according to features. Game somersaults in the air, perform funny and beautiful tricks. High-flying pigeons, in turn, can be compared with racing cars among their relatives. These are elite individuals that have been carefully and carefully selected and bred for hundreds of years.

High-flying representatives are distinguished by high flight and fly far and long. “Beauty is rarely combined with wisdom” as well as with flying qualities. Breeders began to attach greater importance to the exterior of the pigeons, and as a result, the birds forgot how to fly well, today there are several dozen breeds, but each of them has its own outstanding features. Bryansk, Bugulminsky, Chistopol high-flying Sverdlovsk - each breed is unique in its own way.

Sverdlovsk pigeons

Sverdlovsk pigeons are widespread in the Urals, although it cannot be said that they are only Ural. The breed lives in other cities of the country, although to a lesser extent. They brought such birds from the Yekaterinburg gray-pocked pigeons. As a result of long-term selection, 5 varieties of the breed were obtained, the main difference of which is in color.

  1. Sverdlovsk high-flying pigeons quickly fly to a very high altitude. In flight, they last 3-6 hours, sometimes they can be in the air throughout the night.
  2. Sverdlovsk individuals are perfectly oriented on the ground, always returning back to the dovecote. Rarely lost.
  3. The plumage is tough. Length - about 35-37 cm, strong physique, oval head, medium beak. The eyes are bright, white and yellow.

Budapest pigeons

Budapest pigeons, responding to the name, were bred in Budapest. High-flying birds of this breed are small in size, with a lively character. Strong and hardy, fly high and long enough: from 5 to 10 hours. The breed is especially popular in Hungary. Feature: Budapest pigeons fly in a dense flock. It is considered a drawback if the birds come off from each other. The average size of the body, a low forehead smoothly flows into the black beak. The feather of such birds can be of different colors. Among the shades you can even find red.

Perm pigeons

Perm high-flying pigeons bred in the city of Perm. For breeding, species of local birds and imported ones were crossed, resulting in a breed of pigeons with good flying ability and a strong attachment to the pigeon. These birds are bred throughout Russia.

  1. There are many color options in plumage: there are both one-color birds and with a pattern. Among the latter, an interesting line of “cook” pigeons or hryvnias with a colored spot. Bald-headed flyers look beautiful. You can see an example of such birds in the photo.
  2. Perm pigeons do not fly at high altitudes individually and in groups. Flight duration - from 5 to 12 hours. The most enduring and strong birds are called "diamond".

The Perm breed of sports pigeons stands out among all other varieties. For this reason, breeders often profit from novice houses by selling them fakes or culls.

Mordovian flyers

Mordovian pigeons were bred in Mordovia, and this is the only fact known about their origin. The flight of birds is long, the flyer stays in the air from 7 to 10 hours. There are exceptions: some birds are more resilient than others. It all depends on training and how useful the feeding was.

  1. Mordovian pigeons are extremely attached to the dovecote, and it is not easy to accustom them to a new house. It often happens that, having wintered in a new place, in the spring the flyer goes in search of an old place of residence or refuses to eat and drink.
  2. The head is oval, with a steep forehead. Eyes are yellow in different shades. Mordovian flyers are usually black and blue with white streaks and spots. There are also black spots and streaks on a white background. They look effective, as you can see by looking at the photo.

Why do not fly modern high-flying pigeons. Personal reasoning

Pigeons high-flying

Famous combat flyers

Poultry during the flight somersault and flap their wings. The peculiarity of the flight was developed thanks to a long selection. The best battle breeds are in Turkey, the Caucasus and Central Asia.

  1. Tehran or Persian flyers have small beaks. The number of color options is amazing.
  2. Iranian. The best fighting birds of the world, which fly slowly and not for long. They have a specific and loud battle.
  3. Pugachevsky. The breed has not yet been registered, but is known among breeders who are happy to breed its representatives. Their advantages: unpretentiousness and beautiful flight, but the standard of physique and color has not yet been determined.
  4. Takla is very fond of somersaulting in the air, because of which they can lose their orientation and break. However, these fighting pigeons stay in the air longer than their counterparts - more than 10 hours.

Other high-breed breeds

Some breeds are popular mainly in their homeland, which does not make them worse than pigeons, whose fame thundered around the world. For example, many champions were bred in Kazan.

  1. Dubovskie flyers were bred by Russian breeders. They are bred in the Volga region and in Ukraine. Becoming and proud posture are their expressive features, and plumage is of a very different color.
  2. The Crimean circleless are named after their homeland. For many generations Crimean breeders have perfected this breed. Its representatives are beautiful, their plumage is of different colors.
  3. Astrakhan pigeons are large and powerful birds that have large strong wings and a tail. Favorite pets of breeders of their region.
  4. Serbian birds are widespread in their homeland, in Serbia. Crested, very beautiful, the flight of some specimens lasts up to 10 hours.
  5. Odessa flyers look amazing, and their flight with somersaults is very beautiful. Odessa pigeons in appearance resemble exotic birds.
  6. Kursk pigeons fly in circles and in packs, beautifully spreading their tail. Trained and hardy individuals stay in the air for up to 10 hours.
  7. Nikolaev - amazing end pigeons, almost instantly gaining height.

There are many worthy breeds of high-flying pigeons: Sverdlovsk, Budapest representatives, Perm variety - each novice poultry breeder can choose the ones that suit his requirements better than others.

A person’s desire for height also affected pets. For a long time, pigeons were used as postmen. But at some point, the breathtaking beauty of flight became decisive. High-flying pigeons bring aesthetic pleasure to a long game in the sky.

Careful selection of high-flying pigeons over the course of several centuries led to the formation of rocks with excellent flight characteristics, capable of displaying beautiful figures in the air for long hours.

The main quality is the height, as well as the duration of the summer. Despite this, in recent centuries, many breeds were subjected to selection according to external data (body shape and plumage pattern), in some cases, to the detriment of flying qualities. Although as exhibits they do not often get high marks.

In modern pigeon breeding, there are several dozen high-flying breeds. The time record at height belongs to the famous English tipplers. It was recorded in 1963, when the bird was continuously in the sky for more than 20 hours. On average, the flight time does not exceed 6 hours.

High-flying breeds are characterized by unpretentiousness, quick getting used to the regime, as well as the need for light feed.

Among the pigeons conduct competitions. Evaluation criteria in each country are different, often quite arbitrary. It is especially difficult to measure the height when the pigeon disappears from sight - this happens at a distance of more than 1.7 km from the ground.

High-breed rocks come in three types:

  • simple, maximally preserved flight qualities. The most famous representatives flying higher and longer than the rest are Sverdlovsk high-flying pigeons, Nikolaev, Kursk, Odessa;
  • stately. When selecting stately high-flying pigeons, the main emphasis was on decorativeness. Some breeds generally went into exhibition status. The rest have slightly worse flight characteristics than simple ones;
  • slaughter. A special kind of high-flying pigeons. For a long time they were rejected for a peculiar style - “battle”: they tumble long in the air, rising almost steeply upward.

Modern technologies complicate the development of high-flying pigeon breeding: at altitude, orientation from electromagnetic and radio emissions is lost, there is a risk of exposure to harmful gases in the atmosphere.

Pigeons show the best performance in the area where they were born. Years are affected by weather conditions and the presence of ascending winds.

  Variety of flights

For several centuries, high-flying pigeons welcomed only two flight styles:

  • round when birds rise in circles in the sky, and then for a long time remain on such a trajectory, above the limits of visibility. This style provides an economical expenditure of energy, which means that the bird will spend a long time at the height;
  • persistent. Height is gained without circles. After reaching a certain level, high-flying pigeons freeze and for a long time remain in one place - they stand. This also allows you to increase the duration of the flight.

Currently, among the high-flying pigeons, there is a separate group of Turmans or Fighting pigeons, which show somersaults in both round and pillar summer, the so-called “figured” “battle” with clicks of wings.

This style requires a lot of physical effort, this affects the time spent in flight. They were rejected to achieve maximum duration and altitude.

In addition to flight styles, high-flying pigeons have their types that characterize how birds move their wings in the process. The most famous, characteristic of a circular climb, are noted mainly in Nikolaev pigeons:

  • "Lark", similar to the manner of flying birds of the same name. At the same time, the wings are kept strictly perpendicular to the body, the dove characteristically flutters with them. Widely turns the tail. Hangs periodically, stopping the sweep;
  • "butterfly". It differs from the previous type in the setting of the wings relative to the body: at an angle of 30 ° forward. The flight is continuous, accompanied by the same flutter of wings;
  • "End". A feathered pet in the air, as it were, sits on its maximally deployed tail. The rib cage is raised upwards, and the wings are thrown overhead, as far forward as possible. Keep in parallel. Having gained height, they freeze (at this moment they are similar to a plate), they tremble with edge feathers;
  • "Sickle". It is similar to the previous one, but the wings bend in the form of a sickle, so the head is framed by an oval;
  • "oared". Rare enough. Pigeons gain height by flapping alternately with each wing. Inherent to Zaporizhzhya - a variety isolated in a separate breed from a population of Nikolaev pigeons.

  Breed Overview

Different regions boast high-flying pigeons. Rocks are usually of local importance. This is reflected in the title. In addition, there are also, for example, Budapest high-flying pigeons, which are divided into separate groups inside the breed, depending on their color.

  Budapest

The medium-sized Budapest pigeons are distinguished by a harmonious elegant physique, however, the birds are muscular, well developed, with a strong skeleton. Eyes are bluish with pink specks, framed by two-row bluish-gray eyelids. The wings, neck and narrow tail are of medium length. The legs are short. Meet with "panties". As a rule, fly in a bunch, heap. The flight is round.

The plumage is dense, adjacent. It comes in different colors. The most famous among the Budapest pigeons:

  1. Pure white. Separately stand out White with a wreath.
  2. Stork
  3. Spotted.
  4. Half-length They are popularly called "Derishi" or Hungarian gray high-flying.

  Izhevsk

Izhevsk high-flying people have a typical physique for the group. Often they are compared with Perm. It is believed that they and Izhevsk pigeons have the same roots.

These are strong, strong birds, capable of a long round flight. The plumage is smooth, dense, adjacent. There are various colors, but black, red and yellow predominate.

  Mordovian

One of the few fairly young populations of Mordovia is Mordovian pigeons. The flight style is similar to Perm, the physique is typical for high-flying. The plumage is mainly black, red and blue-pocked. Birds look quite decorative and at the same time perfectly show themselves in the sky.

  Nikolaev

The famous "natives", Nikolaev pigeons - birds of flightless flight, demonstrate all its types in the air. Official registration dates back to 1910. Distributed everywhere due to the beautiful manner of summer.

Pigeons of medium size, strong, dry constitution. The chest is powerful, convex, rises 40–45 °. Long wings are loose on the sides. Eyes in different shades of brown. The tail is wide. Colors from snow-white to different intensities of black. According to the drawing, Nikolaev pigeons are divided into several groups. There are white-tailed, variegated, “martins”, “mury”.

  Odessa

Odessa high-flying in style of flight - Turmans. These are harmonious, very hardy birds. Reach 43 cm in length. A distinctive feature is a slightly flattened head. Pigeon growers compare it with a snake. Feathers are not feathered. The plumage is velvety, creates the illusion that it is oiled. The most common are dark cherry white-tailed, white red-headed, dark gray and pink. Often gray, white with a wide variety of patterns and black.

  Perm

Perm high-flying average physique pigeons. Their length does not exceed 34 cm. The body is strong, muscular, harmonious with high aerodynamic properties. Long wings. The tail is rectangular. Eyes, waxes, graceful eyelids. The rainbow is reddish. There are different colors and patterns, they do not stand out as independent breeds:

  1. Hryvnia.
  2. White-tailed baldheads.
  3. Color-breasted Perm pigeons.
  4. Plain.

  Sverdlovsk

Officially, Sverdlovsk pigeons were registered at the dawn of the 20th century. They were bred in the Urals on the basis of native birds, having formed their breed of high-flying. In length up to 37 cm. Black and gray-gray lines prevail. Meet with a forelock. The body is elongated, strong, strong. The narrow eyelids and middle beak are most often grayish in color. The rainbow is whitish, sometimes yellow. The wax is grayish-white. The legs are not feathered. They are characterized by a narrow tail.

Longevity is determined by heredity and training. It is not recommended to allow the appearance of mestizos. The lack of timely culling also has a bad effect on flight performance. However, without experiments conducted by enthusiasts, there would be no modern breeds of high-flying pigeons.

Pigeons are beautiful, noble birds that, together with people, have populated the whole world. Since ancient times, mankind has tried to domesticate them and use them for various purposes. One of the most unique and unusual creatures ever made by man is considered to be high-flying pigeons, which for centuries served as messengers and postmen, and today bring real aesthetic pleasure with their breathtaking airy "representations".

Feature of high-flying pigeons

High-flying pigeons are a special breed of birds, which is characterized by high indicators of the maximum height of flight and its duration.

Did you know? English pigeons set a world record in flight duration in 1963. Their travel time was 20 hours 10 minutes. While the average flight duration of high-flying birds is 26 o'clock.

  In ancient times, the main requirements for birds were:
  • flight duration;
  • height.

Today, more and more attention has been paid to the exterior appearance of birds: the structure of the body, the color of plumage, the shape of the head, etc. Representatives of this breed are inherent in good orientation, quick adaptation to the regime, undemanding to the conditions of detention, lightness and simplicity in nutrition.

High-flying pigeons are easily distinguished by their unique body structure, in which all parts are subordinate to flight. Birds have small compact sizes, streamlined body, well-developed chest, small head, long, strong wings, tightly adjacent to the body.

  Birds of "high flight" are divided into three types:

  • simple:birds that have retained their flying qualities to the maximum are characteristic of their ancient ancestors. They are characterized by the highest and longest flights;
  • stately:  pigeons, which are distinguished by high exterior qualities, close to decorative, but low flying properties. Their representatives are used to participate in various exhibitions;
  • combat:  They got their name because of the unusual manner of flight - birds tumble in the air for a long time, and then almost vertically rise upwards.

As for the flight altitude, this characteristic is slightly subjective. There are special standards that guide judges during international competitions, based on an analysis of the size of a pigeon in the sky:

  • the height of the bell tower is 80–120 m;
  • the bird has the size of a lark - 200-400 m;
  • sparrow size - 400-600 m;
  • the size of a butterfly is 600-800 m;
  • the smallest point in the sky is 800–1000 m.
  • you cannot see a bird without optics - above 1500-1700 m.

Modern pigeons rarely rise above the "point flickering in the sky", because due to the lack of training and the poor environmental situation, they gradually lose their flying properties. Also, the flight time decreased, which is on average 2-3 hours.

Flight style

High-flying breeds of pigeons differ not only in the height and duration of flights, but also in the style of flight.

Circular

With a circle style of flight, pigeons in circles rise to a certain height and are on the same trajectory for a long time. The advantage of this style is that the bird spends its energy economically and, thus, is able to stay in the sky for a long period of time.

Persistent

Persistent style involves climbing without circles. Having reached a certain level, the bird “hangs” in the air, as it were, and remains standing at one point. A similar style also makes it possible to achieve a longer stay in the sky.

Different types of rocks

There are many breeds of high-flying pigeons that differ in external data, origin, flight characteristics.

The main

Breeds of pigeons are often of local importance, which is reflected in their name. The presence of their birds "high flight" boasts many regions and many countries of the world.

Perm

Despite the name, the Perm breed was bred in the last century in Yekaterinburg. Today its representatives are widely used in the Urals, Siberia, and Kazakhstan.
   The peculiarity of birds is a rather large, elongated body, a low-set small round head with yellow eyes and a neat beak.

“Permyaks” are distinguished by a well-developed chest, powerful and large wings, tightly pressed to the body. The colors of the birds are different: black with a gray tint, blue, brown or white.

The maximum residence time of Permians in the air is 6 hours. At the same time, their style is not particularly difficult: they simply rise to a height without making any configurations or turns.

Sverdlovsk

Representatives of the Sverdlovsk breed can boast a long, strong and powerful body up to 37 cm, a small head with yellow eyes and a small narrow beak. The body is covered with white, black or combined plumage; on some heads, a small forelock can be seen on the head.
   The limbs of the bird are small, without plumage. The tail is small and narrow. Sverdlovsk pigeons fly in groups, but at a height they fly apart one at a time. Flight times rarely exceed 4-6 hours. At the same time, they take off simply, without figures and turns. Sverdlovsk birds acquired the greatest distribution in Kazakhstan, Siberia, and the Volga region.

Serbian

The bare-footed Turmans with a beautiful crest on their heads are bright representatives of Serbian pigeons. According to some sources, the birds were bred in Belgrade, from where they got their name. However, many golubovedov claim that the Turks brought them to the country.

The birds have a small body, a characteristic crest on the occipital part of the head, a very short powerful neck, which immediately passes into the chest, dense long wings, which are well adjacent to the body.
   The plumage is different: from white to black and blue. “Serbs” carry out on average 5–7-hour flights. Some specimens may remain in the sky for more than 10 hours.

Budapest

Budapest birds, which were called "Turmans" - flocks, they fly in packs, and so dense that no individual is able to come off. Air travel lasts about 5 hours in the visibility zone and at least an hour outside it.

Birds of this species have a small body, a neat smooth head, on which a small beak flaunts, slightly bent at the tip. The plumage of turmans is different - white, stork, white with a wreath, etc.
   The limbs are powerful and short. They are very active, strong and hardy. In some cases, up to 10 hours can be spent in the sky.

Important!It is considered a drawback if the turman during the flight breaks away from his flock. Such birds are subsequently rejected.

Hungarian

Hungarian birds belong to meat breeds, they are distinguished by a rather massive physique, high weight - about 1 kg, therefore they are poorly adapted for long flights.

But, at the same time, the birds have a well-developed parental instinct, remarkably hatch and feed offspring. "Hungarians" are well oriented in space, remember the way home, can return, even hundreds of kilometers away.

Pigeons of Prikamye have many different subspecies within the species, however, all birds are united by their small body sizes, a small round head with a neat beak. Extremities of red color, nails - light. Birds are well oriented in space, unpretentious in nutrition and care, easy to maintain, endowed with highly developed parental instinct.

It was for the breed that many blue-loving people fell in love with it. Feathered species of Prikamye fly in packs, have different styles - butterflies and sickle, thanks to which they easily and quickly conquer new habitats.

Mordovian

The origin of the Mordovian birds is known only by the fact that they were bred on the territory of Mordovia. Representatives of this species are distinguished by white or mottled plumage, a small, slightly elongated body, a small head with a round forehead and small yellow eyes.

Important!A distinctive feature of Mordovian pigeons is their attachment to the house and dovecote. Even if they spend the winter at a new place, then in the spring they will certainly go in search of their old home.

Birds have a very spectacular appearance. They fly in circles, they orientate remarkably, they can spend up to 7 hours at a rather high altitude in the sky.

Bugulminsky

Bugulma or Chistopol pigeons are leaders among all species of high-flying birds. They have white plumage, but on the occipital part there is a black mane. It is due to this color that they are called hryvnias. The hryvnas are distinguished by their external grace, good spatial orientation, endurance, and powerful constitution.

Bugulms begin their flight in packs, then the strongest and most enduring ones rise up, and those that are weaker remain or fall to the ground. They are able to stay in the sky for a rather long time, 7-10 hours. Hryvnas are very attached to the house, almost never take root in other people's dovecot, always find their way to their native place.

Nikolaev

The breed of Nikolaev pigeons was first registered at the beginning of the last century on the territory of Ukraine, Nikolaev. Representatives of the breed have an elongated body of medium size, slightly raised, well-developed chest, neat head with brown eyes and a long, thin beak.

There are birds with the most diverse plumage: white, yellow, black, red, cherry. Pigeons fly without performing circles, in a straight line, rapidly gaining height. They rise into the sky like larks or butterflies.

Slaughter

Fighting pigeons, as if real fighters, perform many somersaults during the flight, actively flapping their wings. Such an extraordinary sight attracts and surprises. However, before the birds will be pleased with such unique flights, they need long-term training. The best battle breeds come from the Turkish Republic, the Caucasus, Central Asia.

Pakistani

Pakistani or Indo-Pakistani pigeons have a slightly dry, slender body, but quite powerful and strong chest. The color of the plumage is different: marble, black, white. "Pakistanis" have a good orientation, can be in the sky for a long time.
   Their flight style is truly mesmerizing: the bird stops, spreads its tail out with a fan, then rapidly gains height, while flapping its wings loudly. Such an amazing game alternates with circular flights, which last about 5-7 hours.

Birds are easy to care for and not demanding on food. However, their departures take up a lot of energy, so the menu needs to be well balanced.

Baku

Representatives of Baku pigeons are considered the most beautiful among high-flying birds. They have a strong, streamlined physique, an elongated head, a thin beak, a neat neck with a beautiful bend. The color of plumage is white, black, mixed.
   But the appearance for the birds does not matter much. Their main "trick" is the exit to the pillar during the flight and the dependent battle, which they perfectly demonstrate, flying scattered individually. The birds were first bred on the territory of Baku, and later spread to many countries of the former Soviet Union.

Pugachevsky

Despite its ancient origin, Pugachev pigeons still do not have official status. This is due to the fact that the species diversity of birds does not make it possible to finally determine their characteristic qualities and body standard.

Among the species, one can meet representatives with different colors and constitution, various genetic inclinations, flight style, etc. Nevertheless, birds have an external appeal, beautiful summer, are very simple and undemanding in care, not capricious in food. They have a wonderful orientation in the air.

Iranian

The Iranian breed of pigeons is one of the oldest on the planet. All representatives of Iranian birds have an elongated, rather strong body, a rounded head without plumage, or with a small tuft on the back of the head.

Did you know?The first references to Iranian birds are kept by thousand-year-old sources, which stated that the breeders of Ancient Persia bred a unique breed of pigeons, which fascinated not only with their magnificent view, but also with the extraordinary beauty of the flight.

The beak of birds is long, slightly bent at the tip. The color of the birds is different: you can find completely black or white birds, almond, gray, yellow, etc. The tail is long, it must have at least 12 feathers.

In flight, the birds are slow and very calm. Mandatory elements of flight are: exit to the post for a few seconds and the battle that can be heard, even at a very high altitude. The flight properties of pigeons are estimated by the duration of the flight, it should be at least 3 hours. Some specimens can travel in the sky for up to 10 hours.

Pigeons of the Takla breed are remarkable for their stamina and strength. They are very playful in flight, like to tumble, stay in the sky for a long time, which is fraught with a loss of coordination, which in turn can lead to death.

   Some representatives of the breed can stay in the air much longer than their nearest gather, over 10 hours.

Tehran (Persian)

Tehran pigeons amaze with a variety of colors. In their appearance, they are more reminiscent of hawks, have a similar constitution, have a powerful chest, a small rounded head, a short but powerful beak, long, strong wings, the span of which can reach up to 70 cm.

A characteristic feature of the flight of Persian birds is an active battle with a further exit to the pillar. Also, pigeons can climb to the height of the "fly" and hang there for several minutes. "Tehran" are a subspecies of Iranian flyers.
   Large and miniature, massive and neat, black or white, calm or brisk - high-flying pigeons are amazing birds that many have loved for their breathtaking flights and unique flight "performances" in the air.

Usually high-flying pigeons have the best performance when flying in the area where they hatched. An important factor for high and long flights is air flows, their strength and direction, as well as the quality of the air. Pigeons fly better in clean, transparent air, with ascending currents. Therefore, it is better to fly high-flying birds in the early morning. The rutting time should be constant, developing a conditioned reflex for pigeons to fly. You can feed the birds only after the end of the flight and never forget that you can not overfeed the high-flying pigeons. It is not recommended to give the bird, especially the young one, to walk a lot on the roof or on the ground, since after that the pigeons reduce their flight performance. Good flying pigeons usually sit on their own shelf or in a nest, fly off only to feed themselves, drink water and swim in the summer. In training pigeons with high-altitude and long-term flight, an important role is played by the presence of one or two leaders with excellent flight qualities in the flock, who lead the whole flock to a great height and are there for several hours. The flight schedule of pigeons is made taking into account the duration of stay of birds in the air. When pigeons flew 10-12 hours or more, they should be allowed to rest and released the next time in 1-2 days. When flying 5-6 hours, you can chase birds daily, and if they flew 13 hours - in the early morning and evening. Flying in the evening is sometimes delayed until nightfall. Individual pigeons leave pigeons to fly at night, until dawn, and good pigeons sometimes fly longer. Pigeons of high-flying breeds (flight duration - 10-15 hours), such as Odessa, Nikolaev, Kursk, should be chased no more than three times a week. In the Kursk breed, a large round head indicates good helicopter abilities, and a well-built wing indicates its ability to soar above in the presence of wind. As a rule, strong winds in windy weather should not be driven. In those cases when a marriage appeared during the flight of a turman - a kick (after a somersault, the dove lags behind the flock and flies below), this shortcoming should be corrected by persistent dispersal. In a well-rounded flock of Turmans, flapping wings is considered a vice; such pigeons should be removed from the flock. Tumbling at low altitude during short flights often leads to injury. This flaw is well inherited. Such tourmans need to be paired with flying doves - this reduces the risk. Strong feathered legs, such as that of cosmos and pigeons, makes flying difficult. In pigeons not recorded at the exhibition, the feathers of the legs should be trimmed. Some amateurs, unsure of their bird, equip the roof lights and use it when it gets dark. It is possible to chase high-flying pigeons almost all year round, but one must take into account, especially in winter, whether hawks and other birds of prey are present in this area, as well as low temperatures. For pigeon flights, climatic and weather conditions are of no small importance. From many years of experience we know that most of the Nikolaev pigeons do not fly if there is not even a slight wind or constant ascending air currents, and the hryvnia, on the contrary, like calm weather and a clear sky. In inclement weather, when it snows, it rains or in the sky low cumulus clouds, a strong wind blows, high humidity, it is better not to drive birds. In bad weather, pigeons take off reluctantly, often get lost, wean for a long time and fly high. Regarding the determination of the possibility of a good flight of pigeons and their preparation for the run, there are signs of the 18th – 19th centuries set forth in the collection “Dove Hunter” (1896). These signs can be used at the present time. For example: “Let the feather from the holder to the top - if it falls to the bottom, it means that the pilot will not take the top; misfortune, the feather will fly off and will constantly rise to the top, then the pilot will fly away to cancel. If the cobwebs fly and constantly rise to the top, it also means that the pilot flies merrily to the top and gradually turns to the bottom. ” "Do not drive three times, and do not keep on the roof for many hours." “A good bird in the summer. She’s not going to fly well, unless she’s always fed up or not to drive her out completely. ” One can also cite signs when high-flying pigeons fly well, for example, if smoke or steam rises vertically or with a slight slope up, or birds soar in the air. However, the basis of a beautiful, good flight of pigeons is the correct choice of breed, knowledge of the rules for keeping and training birds, as well as patience and perseverance of the pigeon breeder. When training high-flying pigeons, especially a circleless flight, it is necessary to take into account the location of the nursery. It should be clearly visible from above, convenient for lifting, planting pigeons. It is advisable that there are no tall houses and trees nearby. This applies to the greatest extent to the pigeon breeders of large cities with multi-story buildings. In enclosed yards, where there are no air currents at the level of the roof of the nursery, but there are higher ones, it is possible to raise Nikolaev pigeons by throwing them up by hand or moving them to an open area with air draft or wind and release. If there is air draft (wind) between the high-rise buildings, then it is used when driving pigeons from the nursery or birds are taken and taken from the nursery in the direction of the wind and released. They are sent to the nursery in the wind and, having caught under the wings streams of oncoming air movement, they gain height and go up, where they perform the flight set by them. The flight qualities of pigeons (style and duration of flight) are well inherited, so the parental pairs must be selected taking into account the flight qualities of the male and female. Pigeons of the Nikolaev breed with sickle flight (with horizontal smooth pumping) to steam only with sickle; pigeons holding wings in front of themselves (front) during the flight, to pair with birds having the same flight style.

Training methods for Nikolaev and Ochakov pigeons

Lovers of Nikolaev and Ochakov pigeons should always remember that they are holding a flying bird. Flying pigeons should be light, mobile, have smooth, soft, good plumage, as they need to fly high and long. It is very important to keep in mind that pigeons should not be overfed, it is better to underfeed them. Obese pigeons, of course, cannot fly. The run of Nikolaev and Ochakov pigeons is different, as it depends on the weather. It is only necessary to remember that these birds fly with a characteristic flight only in the presence of wind. If the wind is 5-12 m per second, then pigeons should be thrown out of hands high up in groups. When the first group rises high enough, they throw up the second, which seeks to catch up with the first, and the first rises higher and higher; then, in the same sequence, the remaining groups are launched. With this rut, pigeons do not pile up, easily go up and look very nice in the summer: the first group is almost in the clouds, the second is slightly lower, the third is at medium height. Pigeons fly well when a rising wind of 5-8 m / s blows. In good windy weather, pigeons are lifted all at once, scaring them with a pole with a rag. If the wind is weak, less than 5 m / s, birds should be brought 50-100 m from the dovecote and then tossed. This gives them the opportunity to rise to a certain height, to catch the flow of air and rise up. The more often pigeons chase, the higher and longer they fly. Therefore, in summer weather, they should be chased daily, except for those days when it rains, snow or fog. It is advisable to release pigeons for the rut at the same time. In spring and summer - only in the morning, or in the morning and afternoon, when there is wind. In autumn and winter - in the middle of the day. In this case, until noon, you need to keep the birds indoors and not feed. If chased pigeons have young animals, then they are chased only once in the morning, since pigeons fly for 2-3 hours, or even more. In the evenings it is dangerous to chase Nikolaev, they can be caught by darkness, and then they fly all night and only at dawn they begin to fall. But if it rains at night, the pigeons get wet and often disappear. Young people begin to be trained after they spend 20-30 days on the roof of the dovecote. They need to be taught to fly alone, without the old ones. In the early days, young people should not climb to a great height, therefore, for the first training sessions, windy and preferably cloudy weather is chosen so that young pigeons do not rise too high and fly without making circles. It should be borne in mind that young people do not withstand the pace of flight of well-driven old pigeons and, having first reached a high altitude, lose their landmark and may not return home. To avoid this, young growth is always raised in the morning, because if he loses his orientation, he will be able to look for his dovecote during the day. Sometimes for the rut with the young they are selected such old ones who do not fly for a long time, do not make turns, do not fly in a circle. They should rise vertically, strictly above the dovecote, standing still. Before rutting, you can first throw young ones into the air when the main flyers descend. Then, after a week or two, start up with the old ones. The Ochakov pigeon breeders recommend that young birds that fly out be accustomed to be taught early in the summer by squeaks. First, in calm weather, birds should be thrown close to the dovecote, then gradually increase the distance, taking them to a distance of 300 m. After such a training, when the wind blows with ascending currents, the young growth immediately rises and, after several such flights, flies willingly and well oriented. In assessing the flight qualities of Ochakov pigeons, one should not draw hasty conclusions; one needs to check the pigeon several times in flight under different weather conditions, paying attention to the contours of the wing, which should be sickle-shaped. You also need to know that after molting, many pigeons noticeably change the quality of flight, and some improve it. One of the main reasons for the constant loss of pigeons during the rut is that many Nikolaev and Ochakov pigeons have a poor orientation, and this quality is transmitted to posterity. The reasons for the loss of pigeons by season are listed below.
