On the eve of the spring conscription, which begins on April 1, we met with the military commissar of Udmurtia Alexander Komlev and found out how he himself ended up in the army, whether his sons served, and why there are more and more women soldiers.

– Alexander Georgievich, how did you get into the army?

- Thanks to my wife. I was born and raised in Kemerovo, then my parents decided to move to Barnaul, and my future wife remained in Kemerovo. So, to be close to her, I entered the Kemerovo Higher Military School of Communications.

My parents, who had nothing to do with military affairs (father worked at a thermal power plant all his life, mother as an accountant), were pleased with my choice of profession. They thought that student life was too free for me. In addition, at school I was engaged in wrestling, and traveled with the team to many cities of our large country. So I had all the information to enter a military school.

– How many duty stations did you have to change before you ended up in Izhevsk?

“I had to travel, of course.” Almost every new position I took involved a move to a new duty station: to Germany, to the Orenburg region, to Moscow, Bashkiria... Somehow they thought that my youngest son had to change eight schools. That’s why we only got our own home in 2004. But my example is not yet the most illustrative. I have many friends who have changed a dozen or more jobs. For military personnel of my generation, this is par for the course.

“To get into the army, guys even undergo laser vision correction”

“They offered to stay in Germany, but I returned”

– Where was it more difficult?

– Perhaps in Germany. I got there in 1989, immediately after graduating from military school, and started as the commander of a communications platoon in one of the motorized rifle divisions of a group of Soviet forces. Military units outside our country are experiencing a certain moral pressure. Therefore, when performing any task in a foreign country, you feel a special responsibility and feel proud of your homeland.

- Pride? Despite the fact that in 1989 in Russia there were empty shelves in stores and food was sold using coupons?

– Yes, Germany, which our country won, did not experience such problems. In terms of everyday life, everything was fine there, but this evoked a feeling of admiration, not envy, and did not prevent me and my colleagues from being proud of our country. We all wanted our country to live the same way.

In 1991, Alexander Komlev and his family returned home. Already four of us - his youngest son was born in Germany. He admits that they offered to stay, but he refused, although there were those who took advantage of this opportunity.

– Then didn’t you regret that you didn’t stay in Germany? You returned to a difficult time, when everyone in our country, including the army, did not live, but survived.

“My wife and parents and I have discussed this topic more than once. I speak frankly: I have never regretted and do not regret that we returned to Russia. I couldn’t imagine how it was possible to stay forever in a foreign country. My parents raised me to be a patriot, and the army environment only strengthened this feeling in me. It sounds loud, but it's true.

I’m probably quite conservative, but I’ve never been to Germany since then. For what? I’ll come and have a look, and then what? Something else is more important to me. For example, so that biathletes compete not with German rifles, but with our Izhevsk rifles. This is what worries me much more. That's how I was raised.

– You talk a lot about patriotism at meetings with schoolchildren and conscripts. How can I get this feeling back?

– Parents and teachers should instill a sense of patriotism in children only by their own example. And this needs to be done constantly, and not on holidays - September 1, February 23 and May 9. Otherwise, we will not raise patriots.

How Izhevsk snowdrifts surprised a Siberian

– You have lived and worked in Udmurtia since 2000. What were your first impressions of Udmurtia?

– Although I was born and raised in Siberia, I have traveled to many cities in our country, in Izhevsk I was surprised by the snowdrifts - we moved here in winter. I remember walking with my wife through the city center, and there were snowdrifts taller than a man! We were so impressed then that we grabbed our heads: where were we going! Well, we also knew the famous joke about Udmurtia - the land of evergreen tomatoes.

– If we talk about conscript soldiers, are the guys from Udmurtia different from conscripts from other regions?

“Everyone notes that our conscripts are calm and efficient, so they are happy to take them into service.

– Do the boys themselves want to serve in the army?

– It’s difficult to answer that question, although I get asked it often. I’ll answer this: in 90 percent of cases, it’s not the guys themselves who don’t want to serve in the army. It is the parents who do not want to let them out of their care, although army service is now completely different from what it used to be. Once I even compared it to a resort. So, for example, soldiers can call their relatives, sleep for an hour after lunch, go on leave on weekends and holidays, they are provided with clothes and sports uniforms, in the barracks they live in cubicles of only 3-4 people. In addition, the quality of food has improved significantly. Most people gain weight during their service.

It also often happens like this: young people who want to serve do not pass due to health reasons, but those who want to “drop out,” on the contrary, turn out to be healthy. There are cases when guys, in order to get into the army, had laser vision correction and surgery to remove varicose veins.

The guys who have served do not think that the army is a waste of time. I judge this from the questionnaires filled out by returning conscripts. 95 percent of them rate their service in the army on a five-point scale as “good” or “excellent.” The surveys we have been conducting for several years are anonymous, so everything is fair here. The guys note that the army taught them self-discipline, the ability to work in a team, and master modern weapons. This is also important and necessary - we must be able to protect ourselves if necessary.

By the way, the conditions of service for contract soldiers have also noticeably improved. The best evidence of this is the female military personnel, of whom we have 40 thousand. They had served before, but there were not so many of them. Women in the army are an indicator that the situation with money and housing has improved, which can now be obtained with the help of a military mortgage.

“The army taught me to keep my word”

– You have two adult sons. Did they serve in the army?

“My wife and I initially decided that our sons should serve in the army. But the eldest son, unfortunately, did not pass due to health reasons; he works as a realtor. And the younger one served, now he is an officer of the Federal Penitentiary Service. We never put pressure on our sons; we gave both of us freedom of choice. Everyone made their own decision about who to be, and I think it’s correct.

– Alexander Georgievich, you have been in uniform for almost 30 years. What did serving in the army teach you, and did it change you?

– Any collective influences a person. It’s not for nothing that they say, whoever you hang out with is the one you’ll gain. As for me, the army instilled in me a sense of responsibility. That's why I almost never promise anything to anyone. Many are offended and perceive this as a veiled refusal. But I’m built this way, I think that if I promised something, I have to keep my word.
