Ao mondi slpk. OJSC Mondi Syktyvkar Timber Industry Complex

- Rinat Anverovich, how do you assess the results of the outgoing year?
- We were pleased with the production - due to increased efficiency and a more attentive attitude to problems, we managed to increase its volume without major injections. Despite the negative trends in world markets, our plant is the only one in the group that met the budget not only for production, but also for net profit. It is expected that the BM-11 machine will take first place in the Mondi group in terms of time efficiency, and the BM-15 in terms of quality. This year we accelerated the machines so much that the bottleneck became pulping, which we had to buy.
This year we also paid dividends to shareholders in strict accordance with the charter. In addition, they increased the authorized capital by 300 times, that is, they brought it into line with the status of the company. We bought the land for the plant, which became a guarantor of stability: now a second privatization of the company is impossible, and relationships with Western banks on large investment projects will become much easier. We are no longer dependent on increasing land rental rates, but will only pay land taxes.
We increased our share to 100 percent in all timber industry enterprises and subsidiaries that we needed, and began the procedure for selling non-core assets. Thus, this year “Repair and Construction Trust”, “Papyrus”, “Syktyvkar Paper Products” were sold.
This year our forestry business has changed radically - we transferred part of the forestry base to the plant and now we have the right to choose who will cut it. This was done for the economic stability and security of the enterprise, including for the future. The state has acquired a reliable partner in us, because our stability is higher than that of the timber industry enterprise, we always pay rent, our business is more transparent. Now we have taken on additional responsibilities: we extinguish, restore and certify the forest.
We sold sales offices to Europapir, which made it possible to sort out who is who in the market, and improved interaction with all players.

- What profit is expected for this year?
- About 1.5 billion rubles, the increase is expected to be small, within five percent.

- What do you think was the highlight of the year?
- Of course, renaming the company. The historical name was partially returned to the plant, and now the spirit of cooperation between the famous world company and the Syktyvkar timber processing complex is reflected in the name itself. This shows that the history of the plant is respected, and the people working here are respected. In the outside world, the name Mondi will give greater recognition, it will become easier to talk with the international community and banks. This is an umbrella that speaks for itself.

- Why is the amount it cost to rename the company not disclosed?
- The cost of renaming is difficult to calculate. We are setting figures for these goals for next year. But how, for example, can we calculate the work of our lawyers in re-issuing licenses? Of course, flags and signs will be replaced, but these are small amounts.

- How did the market perceive another innovation this year - the import of paper?
- The Mondi Business Paper group began supplying paper to Russia that no one produces here - color and grade A. The market has taken this very well, sales are already showing profits. I think this supports sales of our paper: that is, when buyers need not only colored paper, they do not rush around looking for another supplier, but turn to us. Few people supply colored papers to Russia, and class A is mainly imported by the Svetogorsk plant.

- What is the current ratio of Syktyvkar timber industry paper sales to the domestic and foreign markets?
- For office paper the ratio remains 50 to 50 percent, for newspaper paper - 60 to 40 and cardboard - 55 to 45, most of which comes from Russia. In general, the Russian paper market today is more prosperous and brings more income than the western one. The Russian market is heavily closed by customs duties, so domestic producers benefit, but we are not ready to throw away all 100 percent of the products here, because this will lead to a sharp collapse in prices.

- How can you characterize the current state of the external and internal paper markets?
- Over the past five years, foreign markets for white paper have been falling, and cardboard is beginning to show the same thing, while the situation for newsprint is stable. The reason for the decline is banal overproduction; too much office paper is now being exported to foreign markets. Many countries do not have their own pulp and paper mills, and they live happily on importing paper, without having any headaches with its production.
On Russian market everything is quite the opposite - newsprint is on a very good rise, cardboard is showing growth, although not as fast, because the production of consumer goods that are sold in packaging is increasing. As for office paper, here we are going sharply up the hill, we are just entering this market, which is developing dynamically. Our volumes are only increasing. A bad trend is emerging for offset paper, since in Russia they began to print more disposable books on low-quality newsprint paper, and accordingly, offset paper consumption is decreasing. That is, the manufacturer moves into the cheap segment, and the market is internally devoured.

- Could this happen with office paper due to computerization?
- Yes today Email almost killed the usual one, but in order to read the document, people still print it out, and print it out on our paper. Therefore, office paper is in demand, and I think this trend will continue in the Russian market. The leader in office papers today remains the Svetogorsk plant, then we, and the other manufacturer is only imported.

- How do the investments of 53 million euros approved for the plant compare with the needs?
- This is almost half of the group’s total investments. But these funds have been allocated to support work and build foundations for the future. For example, without the implementation of a chlorine-free bleaching project, sales on the European market, where prices are slightly higher, are impossible. That is, investments will not help increase production by a single kilogram, but will provide an opportunity to increase profits in the future.

Funds are also planned for the purchase of a large-format sheet-cutting machine. When will he arrive at the plant?
- The machine should come from Austria; it will be installed here in the first quarter of 2005. We want to offer additional service for printing houses and publications: a flute cutter will be able to cut paper for them according to the required formats, because printing houses in last resort invest in paper cutting equipment. This machine is not the most powerful, but you need to try the market. If he responds well, then there is an idea to build a workshop, bring in a powerful flor cutter and start working on a large scale.

- What are your plans for the next year for timber industry enterprises?
- We must continue restructuring and establishing global order. When the reorganization of Ezhva is completed, I think it will become easier, because the majority of unprofitable timber industry enterprises are concentrated there. Created working group to develop a program for the long-term development of the logging industry in the Ust-Kulom region, then the same work will begin in other areas where our subsidiaries operate. There must be an increase in the efficiency of logging, because no one is satisfied with the production of 200 cubic meters per year per person.

- What hinders the development of the forestry industry today?
- Absence of any rules enshrined in the Forestry Code, a unified certification policy, or a road construction program. All loggers in Russia today pay road taxes and at the same time build roads at their own expense - this is absurd. You can follow the path of the Vologda region, which took a loan from the World Bank for the construction of forest roads: 70 percent of the loan is paid by the administration, and 30 percent by industrial companies. Due to this, the region was able to build about 600 km of roads per year. Our plant is negotiating on this topic with the World Bank, then we plan to submit a similar proposal to the Komi Government. After all, this is an investment of the future; there is a catastrophic shortage of forest roads in the republic, and not only for our plant.

- Is there any news on the project to build a sawmill by the Austrian group Tilly?
- Construction should begin next year, in January we should reach the level of signing a trilateral agreement with the group, the plant and the Komi Government. All rumors regarding problems in this project are exaggerated.

- What are your personal expectations for the next year from the work of the plant?
- This, of course, increases production, its efficiency, and reduces injuries. In general, the coming year may please us with the adoption of the investment program for the development of the plant, which was developed by the CTS company. Now there are 3 development options left, the first presentation of the program is scheduled for 2005. If the program is accepted, I will consider that my task has been completed - to attract money and give a new impetus to the development of the plant.

- one of the largest pulp and paper mills in Russia. Located in the Ezhvinsky district of the city of Syktyvkar.

The mill is part of the Mondi company - a division of the integrated Mondi group for the production of paper and packaging.

The company specializes in the production of office and offset papers; it also produces newsprint and cardboard for flat layers of top-liner corrugated cardboard.

The structure of the plant includes its own wood-preparatory production, a pulp mill, a thermal power plant, and a complex of wastewater treatment facilities. Subsidiaries provide transport services, security and retail services.

In September 2010, the enterprise put into operation facilities built as part of the largest project in the Russian pulp and paper industry over the past 30 years - "Step". The total investment is 545 million euros. Thanks to the new equipment, the company was able to increase wood consumption from 3 to 4 million cubic meters per year, and increase cellulose production by more than 20% - to 900 thousand tons. All this plus the complete modernization of two paper-making machines will allow the company to produce more cardboard and paper products and gradually further increase output. Thanks to Step, it will increase by another 20% - up to a million tons per year. SYLPK began to produce more energy. Its generation capacity increased by 80 megawatts. At the same time, the new facilities themselves are less energy-intensive and belong to the “environment friendly” category - that is, "friendly to nature"

Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, SYPC, who visited Mondi, noted that such major changes in the technologies of timber processing industries in a time of crisis for the world economy are a significant phenomenon. The new project is important not only for the timber industry, but also for the entire republic and for the country.

The company's most famous product, Snegurochka office paper, has been named Brand of the Year in Russia four times and is rightfully considered the most popular product in its market segment.

Construction of the plant began in 1963 by decision of the Council of Ministers of the USSR in 1957. June 25, 1969 - the first cardboard machine was put into operation, and this date is the official birthday of SYPC.

At different times the directors of the enterprise were V. P. Bazhanov(first CEO SYLPK), V. L. Sazonov, O. A. Shiryaev, N. N. Balin, A. V. Kononov, M. Yu. Magiy, M. P. Chesnakov, R. A. Starkov, A. N. Dribny, F. V. Ibragimov, Gerhard Kornfeld, Klaus Peller.

The main directions of development are increasing labor productivity, achieving full compliance of products with international standards through the introduction latest technologies production and quality control policies and environmental protection and social security.

In addition, Mondi SYPC actively promotes healthy image life not only at the enterprise and the Komi Republic but also in Russian Federation, being one of the sponsors of the Russian Super League mini-football team "New Generation" (Syktyvkar).

In 2012, the Syktyvkar timber industry complex celebrated a decade of cooperation with by Mondi Europe, within which the enterprise reached a fundamentally new level of development.

In April 2013, the general director of OJSC "Mondi Syktyvkar timber industry complex" Jorma Juhani Turpainen has been appointed.
