Growing asparagus

The foods use young shoots that collect when they reach a height of 15-20 cm.

Success in the cultivation of asparagus is achieved primarily due to thorough soil preparation.

Asparagus matures very slowly. It takes at least three years from planting seeds to the first small harvest. Seed landing is the longest way to reproduction asparagus.

Most gardeners land asparagus in May. It is possible to reduce the time before receiving the harvest by landing the one-year roots. You can also buy two-year roots, but young roots are more preferable, since it is easier to carry stress from transplant.

How to grow asparagus

When you prepare a survey for asparagus, keep in mind that the growing asparagus roots need a thick protective layer of the soil.

Step 1. Drop the trench with a depth of 30 cm and a width of 45 cm. (Leave 120 cm between trench centers, if you plant more than one group of asparagus.
Step 2. At the base of the trench, break the soil to a depth of 20-25 cm.
Step 3. Add 200 g of fertilizer for every 3 m trenches.

Preparation of soil

Asparagus prefers neutral soil with a pH of about 7.0. There were more acidic soil, add lime.

Step 4. After that, add a layer of compost 10 cm into the lower part of the trench, which will feed the plants for several years.
Step 5. To ensure the roots of a hard framework, you will confuse the soil at the bottom of the trench.

When growing asparagus, one of the most important knowledge is when and how to collect fresh gentle shoots.

  • Two years after planting annual roots, you can collect the first harvest.
  • Asparagus is ready for harvest when the stems reach 20 cm in height and 1 cm or more in diameter.
  • In the first year, collect a crop at a minimum.
  • Let the stalk as far as possible continue to grow and feed the plant in the following years.
  • It is very important to collect asparagus sprouts in the right time.
  • During the warm weather, check the preparedness for the collection every day.
  • Savages quickly produce side branches and leaves, after that the possibility of harvest is lost.
  • You will not need a special tool for the collection of shoots.
  • Flex the stalks until they break.
  • Put fertilizers immediately after harvesting and again in mid-July and mid-August.
  • Reach the fruits for many years!
